What is the technical skills program?

This program is designed to help kids improve their physical literacy as it related to ball hockey. In this program, kids will learn the basics of shooting, passing, stickhandling, and footwork so they can put themselves in better positions to be an impact player during their ball hockey games. We also offer dedicated goalie sessions with Coach Marco where the kids will learn goalie positioning, movement patterns, scramble drills, and reaction challenges.

How are technical skills different from practices or games?

  • Games are for competing against other players and teams
  • Practices are for learning how to work as part of a team
  • Technical skills are for building a personal skill set that will help kids become more effective in both practices and in games

Why should my kid try technical skills?

  • 16 kids in a 1 hour game = less than 4 minutes with the ball per player
  • 1 hour of technical skills = 60 minutes with the ball
  • So 1 hour of technical skills = 15 games worth of experience!

What types of technical skills are offered?

  • Shooting (wrist shot, snap shot, slap shot, backhand shot)
  • Stickhandling (deking variations coming soon)
  • Footwork, positioning, and running mechanics
  • Goalie-specific training offered as well

How much does it cost to participate?

You can pick up a game pack in quantities of 5, 10, or 20 and apply those credits to technical skills sessions by texting PLAY to 587-609-5901 and following the prompts to find and join a game. A detailed breakdown of game pack costs and additional information can be found here.

I’m not sure I can afford to put my kid in all of these extra options, are there any financial assistance options here?

Yes of course! Finances should not be a barrier to a child playing sports. Email us at youth@westernballhockey.com and we are more than happy to discreetly discuss some solutions with you. In addition to accepting Jumpstart and Kidsport funding, we have other financial solutions as well that can be explored.
